The IRS issues tax transcripts to taxpayers who need them. A transcript is actually not a copy of the tax return, but a list of things contained on the tax return as filed originally by the taxpayer; but you can be issued with a copy of your return for a fee by the IRS. The IRS allows taxpayers to apply and get their tax transcripts in five main ways; online, via phone, IRS2GO, Form 4506T-(EZ) and through a tax pro.
You will be required to present various verification details like the Social Security Number, zip code, street address and date of birth, as shown on the last return filed. Joint filers should use the SSN and the date of birth of the primary taxpayer that was listed on the return.
Phone: Call the IRS and follow the prompts (enter the data requested).
IRS2Go: This is a smart phone app that allows taxpayers to access various IRS services from their phones. You can request for a tax return or tax account transcript sent to the address on the file or specify the address you would like to pick it up from. However, keep it mind that this may but be the most dependable way to request your transcripts; some taxpayers have complained of the ineffectiveness of the IRS2Go application.
Online: This is also a way to request your transcript: from the official IRS website. You are expected to provide some login details for verifications and a mailing address. You can use the default address on the tax return file.
Form 4506T/450 EZ: The two are the only forms that taxpayers can use to order transcripts for either the current year or the previous three tax years. The IRS can fax or mail the forms to taxpayers on request. You can also use the forms to authorize the IRS to send the transcripts to a third party, like a mortgage company, or have them mailed directly to your current address- it must be accurately specified when filling the forms.
Use a Tax Pro: You can use Form 2848 (Power of Attorney) or Form 8821 to have your tax expert request for the transcripts on your behalf.
