National Tax Amnesty to Help All Taxpayers

Since the full Senate accepted the economic stimulus package, the House Senate conference committee must produce a report that is united. All two bodies must approve of the new account prior to getting Obama’s approval. However, according to a former IRS attorney, there is an easier way to get the economy moving and more cash into the federal treasury that is in shortfall- the answer is a national tax amnesty.
There has been a list of tax amnesty programs by the Federation of Tax Administrators since 1982. According to the program, the offending taxpayers of a state have permission to pay tax owed for a specified time period and the state in question will not gather penalties. In certain instances, the IRS will also relinquish interest; this is done to get accounts closed. Once the taxpayer settles the bill, the IRS won’t be on their case.
Howard Levy is a past IRS attorney who agrees an amnesty program should be made available on a national scale. This would help people who fall behind on their tax bills for unavoidable reasons such as divorce, serious illness or loss of employment. These factors greatly affect an individual’s income and can cause them to withdraw from the tax proceedings.
When such taxpayers are in an improved financial situation, they don’t catch up and even prefer to keep out of the tax loop because every five years penalties and interests double their first tax liability; e.g. A taxpayer pays $100 per month on a $20,000 tax bill and discovers their debt gets larger due to penalties and interests instead of less.
A national tax amnesty program would give offending taxpayers an opportunity to settle their tax bill when filed without penalties and interest rising. Howard Levy believes a probationary five years would oblige taxpayers to pay future tax bills.
